In the mid-20th century, George Papanikolaou invented the Pap smear. He discovered that, by collecting cells from the surface of the mucosa and studying them under the microscope, you can identify lesions that are hiding inside the epithelium.
The method became internationally known as the «Pap test» and has saved millions of lives from cervical cancer.
