HPVs are selective. They only infect the epithelium of the skin and the mucous membranes of certain organs. As we know, skin covers the body externally, while mucous membranes line inner cavities, like the mouth and the vaginal canal. The surface of both the skin and the mucous membranes are covered with epithelium (layers of cells with a protective role).
